All About Our Ocean

Our oceans are just as important as the land — and they are facing serious challenges too. The ocean is full of plastic and microplastics — an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces. Every year this number continues to grow, and we need to take action to stop it. The oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface, and the creatures and plants living there need our help to survive.

What Is the Ocean?

The ocean is a vast, salty body of water that covers most of the Earth. There are five main oceans — the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic — but they are all connected, forming one giant global ocean. Many species live in these waters, including fish, dolphins, whales, jellyfish, octopuses, and tiny organisms called phytoplankton, which help produce the oxygen we breathe.

However, the ocean faces many problems, such as plastic pollution, rising temperatures, and overfishing. Although humans have explored only a small portion of it, the ocean remains full of incredible creatures, mysteries, and habitats that are essential to life on Earth.

Saving the Oceans, One Step at a Time

On the Surface of Our Oceans

  • Number of plastic pieces: 5.25 trillion
  • Total Weight: 269,000 tons

On the Ocean Floor

  • Estimated total mass: 3 to 11 million metric tons
  • Concentration: Roughly half of this mass is found at depths of less than 200 meters.
  • Distribution: Around 46% of this plastic mass is clustered around continents, mostly in coastal areas.

Yearly Additions

  • Estimated amount: 8 to 11 million metric tons enter the ocean each year.
  • Sources: ncludes waste from land-based sources, as well as fishing and shipping industries.

Other Details

  • Microplastics: The deep sea is heavily polluted with microfibers, with some areas estimated to have up to 4 billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer.
  • Degradation: Plastic does not biodegrade in the ocean. Instead, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces — known as microplastics — which are often ingested by marine animals and enter the food chain.

Save the Oceans as Well as the Land

At Save Our Earth, we believe the ocean is just as important as the land. It faces serious threats, but if we all work together to protect it, we can make a real difference. Every action — no matter how small — helps move us closer to cleaner, healthier oceans for all life on Earth.
